Economic meltdown is global, financial terms for starting a new business are tough but there is always a but and an open source solution to help you turnaround the game. One suggested solution is WordPress, a more than a trusted blogging platform, a CMS (Content Management Solution) powered by thousands of developers and hundreds of plugins. Best of all, it’s free.

Now, if you can setup and run a WordPress powered blog on your server you can definitely install a plugin and create your own eShop and Cart system within minutes. The official WordPress Plugin Directory hosts the following 6 plugins:

WordPress Cart – This plugin add a shopping cart system to wordpress

DaWanda shop plugin – If you have an account at DaWanda and also a shop, you’ll be able to include your products from DaWanda in (e.g.) your sidebar

Quick Shop – QuickShop supports any WordPress that has the Sidebar Widgets installed, really. It adds a SideBar widget that shows the user what they currently have in the cart and allows them to remove the items, not to mention a TinyMCE button to easily allow you to add products to your posts/pages

eShopno description available other than the change log

WP e-Commerce – The WP e-Commerce shopping cart plugin for WordPress is an elegant easy to use fully featured shopping cart application suitable for selling your products, services, and or fees online

YAK for WordPress – YAK is a simple shopping cart plugin for WordPress, associating products with weblog entries — thus the post ID also becomes the product code. An options screen is used to configure settings for the shopping cart. There are 3 pages in the WordPress Management screens; one for showing & fulfilling orders, another for product management, and basic sales reports

Now, WordPress is not meant to be a panacea for all the eShop and Cart problems, neither is looking to be the next Amazon. Instead it’s open source, free software enabling very low cost e-commerce and cart solutions on top of the trusted foundation of the blogging / CMS platform. If you’re looking for a quick and low cost setup of your next eshop, consider WordPress 2.7 and one of the plugins above. Happy shopping and blogging!

  1. πολύ καλό!!!
    κι έψαχνα τέτοιου είδους plugins.

  2. Nice post!

And how about a great shop-ready WP theme? Here it is http://www.thekingcart.com/2008/10/02/crafty-cart-free-wordpress-ecommerce-plugin-theme/ and it looks great. I came across that 3 days ago while reading an article about the wp-e-commerce plugin.

    • Very nice one. Themes is another great advantage for starting a very low cost WordPress powered eShop

  3. Another one to add to your list is Market Theme.

Market is a WP theme that turns WordPress into an online store. It comes with it’s own built-in shopping cart system to let buyers browse products and easily add items. When the buyer goes through the checkout process, they are transferred to Paypal to complete the transaction.

The theme also comes with a backend administrative plugin that lets you easily add products.

You can play around with an online demo at:

    • Thank you Market but as far as i understand this is a theme not a plugin. Plus i can’t find anything related to the plugin itself in the official WordPress Plugin Directory. Am i missing something?
